Heart Health - Zone Training

By Allyson Auyeung

Everyone understands that exercising is vital to staying healthy; however a lot of people are unaware of the fact that when they exercise they should stay within a predetermined ranger. This range is called the Heart Rate Zone. Working out within this given range is important not only when trying to lose weight, but also for overall heart health.

Calculating your hrz is fairly simple. First you need to find your max heart rate (mhr). This is done by taking 220 and subtracting your current age.

After your max heart rate has been figured out you will then need to figure out your heart rate zone. To do this you will need to take your max heart rate and multiply it by both sixty and eighty percent. Once you have that math completed you will be left with two new numbers that compile the high and low end of your heart rate zone.

These bookends are what you want to keep your heart rate in while you are exercising. By doing this you are making sure that your heart is able to efficiently keep oxygenated blood circulating around your body. If there comes a point where your heart is working too hard or not hard enough your body will not have the oxygen it needs to continue with the workout or activity.

When you workout and keep your heart between those set points you are also continually burning calories. When you burn calories it is less likely that your body will have an excess amount of fat on it. This also keeps the body from depositing fat on or around the heart which could eventually lead to a heart attack.

The heart rate zone plays an important role in our weight loss and overall heart health. The more you exercise within the zone the healthier your body and heart will be overall. Take the time and figure out your heart rate zone before your next workout. - 42569

New England Tops Philadelphia As Tom Brady Returns

By Ross Everett

Tom Brady returned to NFL action and looked good in limited playing time as the New England Patriots opened their preseason schedule with a 27-25 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Brady played into the second quarter, moving well and showing no lingering effects of his knee surgery. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 100 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

The Patriots also rewarded their NFL preseason financial backers by winning outright as a +2 road underdog. The combined 52 points scored shattered the posted total of 32 for an easy OVER--with the Pats and Eagles putting 27 points on the board in the first half, the total had almost been surpassed by the halftime break.

Bradys solid play was no doubt a heartening sight to Patriots fans, though he had little to say after the game on the specifics on his performance:

"I need the work, we all need the work. You can't duplicate this on the practice field."

Instead, Brady focused on the less tangible aspects of being back under center:

"There's no place I'd rather be. This is the place where I probably have the most fun and enjoy it the most. Preseason game doesn't have quite the feel of a regular-season game, but to be out there on the field with my teammates and celebrate after a win, and the bus ride home ... those are the things you probably enjoy the most."

Tight end Chris Baker was more candid in discussing Bradys comeback effort:

"I thought he was sharp. He went out there and moved us up and down the field and put some points on the board.

New England took a 21-6 lead into the locker room at halftime, but would have to hold on for the victory after Philadelphia responded with a 16 point third quarter. The third period onslaught allowed the Eagles to hold a significant edge in most offensive categories including total yardage and time of possession. They had a shot to win the game late, but David Akers missed a 43 yard field goal with just under a minute remaining.

Brady, the two time Superbowl MVP, sat out the entire 2008 preseason with an undisclosed foot ailment. Hes expected to get a significant amount of playing time in exhibition games this year, however, as he tries to regain his regular season form after missing the entire 2008 regular season due to a knee injury.

The Patriots will open the regular season on Monday, September 14 as they host the Buffalo Bills. Philadelphia will begin their regular season campaign on the road in Charlotte, NC against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, September 13. - 42569

San Fran Tops Denver As New Broncos' QB Orton Struggles

By Ross Everett

Kyle Orton's debut as the Denver Broncos starting QB didn't go quite as planned. Orton, who was acquired from Chicago in the off-season, threw interceptions on each of his first three offensive series. San Francisco's offense did just enough to eke out a 17-16 NFL preseason victory before their home fans.

Despite his three interceptions and a solid backup performance by Chris Simms. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has been steadfast in his support of Orton. Orton appeared thankful of this fact in his postgame comments:

"That's great. That's certainly what you need in this league is the support of your coach. I'm not worried about it. I've got a lot of confidence in myself. I think my team has a lot of confidence in me. ... I don't want to make those decisions and throw three interceptions."

Orton was acquired after McDaniels relationship with NFL pro bowler Jay Cutler soured. Its been a rough start to Ortons tenure in Denver"he was even booed during a public scrimmage after throwing an interception.

McDaniels put the fact that it was only the first preseason game into perspective:

"I feel very confident in where we're at. There's no reason to start tailspinning into this and that when we've only had one preseason game."

San Franciscos rapidly improving defense made life miserable for Orton all afternoon. Even when he got decent pass protection, they were able to disrupt the passing lanes. Niners' cornerback Nate Clemens in particular was a huge factor, hauling in one of Ortons three miscues. After the game he commented on the play:

"I saw the route and played my responsibility and he threw it. I like seeing all of our defensive backs get interceptions and just making plays because we're game breakers."

Shaun Hill and Alex Smith are battling for the Niners' starting QB job and both played solid, if unspectacular, football. Hill spoke of his first preseason action:

"We were able to move the ball and we had a big conversion on third down. That last sack kind of hurt us. That was completely on me. The offensive line did a great job out there. So I'd like to have that play back and I feel like we could have gotten seven out of that."

Smith was just excited to be back on the field after missing the entire 2008 season due to injury:

"Obviously, I was raring to go when I got out there. It's been a long time for me, so I was pretty amped up."

Denver will head to the Pacific Northwest for a game against the Seattle Seahawks next Saturday night. San Francisco, meanwhile, will host their local rivals the Oakland Raiders. The Broncos open the NFL regular season on Sunday, September 13th against the Bengals at Cincinnati. San Francisco will get the regular season underway on the same day as they head to Tempe, Arizona to face the Arizona Cardinals. - 42569

Big Names Missing From NBA All Star Game

By Ross Everett

The NBA All Star game was played without a couple of high profile participants this year as the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant and Philadelphia 76ers' Allen Iverson would not play due to injury. Kobe and 'AI' were the latest in a string of injuries to All Star players that also claimed Portland's Brandon Roy and New Orleans' Chris Paul. The NBA has been much more strict about missing the All Star game after many players would come up with illusory 'injuries' right before the game that miraculously healed before play resumed after the break.

Kobe Bryant has been plagued with minor injuries all year, but missed the Lakers' last three games prior to the All Star contest due to an ankle sprain. Los Angeles is hopeful that by not playing in the game that Kobe will be able to return to action immediately after play resumes following the All Star break. Bryant did travel to Dallas to participate in All Star game festivities. Kobe is always the center of attention wherever he goes and presided over the annual slam dunk contest as well as a benefit appearance for retired racing wombats.

Iverson has missed Philadelphia's past five games due to an illness suffered by one of his young children. Unlike Kobe, Iverson wasn't expected to be in Dallas this weekend due to the nature of his situation. It's debatable that Iverson deserved an All Star game nod in the first place. He quickly wore out his welcome in Memphis to start the year, and eventually landed back in Philadelphia where he's averaged 14.4 points per game since his return. He was voted in to the starting lineup by NBA fans, and this renewed calls from the media to revise the procedure for selecting All Star game participants.

Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks was chosen to replace Bryant in the Western Conference lineup, while New York's David Lee was the East's fill in for Iverson. The West already had two 'fill ins' named to their roster as Denver's Chauncy Billups and the LA Clippers' Chris Kaman took the place of Chris Paul and Brandon Roy respectively.

NBA betting enthusiasts had several options on the menu beginning with the annual 'rookies vs. sophomores' game on Saturday. The Sophomores were a -12 point favorite with the total set at 245' but were crushed by the rookie team. - 42569

Colts' Owner Irsay Says Team Will Break Bank To Retain Peyton Manning

By Ross Everett

In what has to be one of the least difficult front office personnel decisions in sports history, Indianapolis Colts' owner Jim Irsay has confirmed that the team will sign quarterback Peyton Manning to a contract extension that could make him the highest paid player in NFL history. Manning's current deal will expire after the end of the 2010 season, with the final two years having been voided due to his meeting a number of performance based criteria. Despite losing the Superbowl this year, the Colts have not wavered on their commitment to Manning as the longterm QB for the team.

You can tell that an owner is adamant about resigning a player when he tells the media that he wants to make him the highest paid player in league history, and Irsay did just that at the NFL's Superbowl media day on Monday:

"You know it's going to get done. I think it's clear, and we'll start on it this summer. That's been the way we do things [to hammer out an extension when a player is entering the final year of his contract]. And it'll be the biggest [contract] in history; there's not much doubt about that."

Not exactly the most advantageous negotiating position to make public that you're committed to breaking the bank to resign a player. Then again, it's not like Manning is a quarterback that can easily be replaced as Irsay emphasized:

"It simply comes to one question, and that's replaceability. Everything is based on the replaceability factor. You make decisions based on who you can afford to target and keep. ... Other guys you really want to [re-sign] you might have trouble doing it, because of what it costs you, and how much attention they're getting [from other teams in free agency]. We don't have that luxury and we've had to work hard."

Manning's agent, Tom Condon, has already had preliminary discussions with the Colts' management about a new deal. Condon also represent's Peyton's brother Eli Manning, and negotiated a $97.5 million contract extension from the New York Giants for him last year. Peyton's contract will almost certainly exceed those figures, with some speculating that he could receive $20 million per year with a $50 million signing bonus up front. - 42569

NFL Flashback: Saints Beat Vikings To Advance To Superbowl

By Ross Everett

Until Sunday, it looked as if the return of Brett Favre to the NFL would have a storybook ending and propel the Minnesota Vikings to the Superbowl. Instead, the New Orleans Saints will be heading to the Superbowl for the first time in franchise history. Garrett Hartley nailed a 40 yard field goal in overtime to give the Saints a 31-28 victory in the NFC Championship game after Brett Favre was intercepted deep in Saints territory during the final seconds of regulation.

The Vikings did reward NFL betting fans who took them as +4 underdogs with a pointspread cover. Minnesota finished the season a solid 11-6-1 against the NFL pointspread. The 59 combined points scored went OVER the posted total of 53'. The Saints went OVER for the second consecutive game after playing four straight UNDER verdicts to close out the regular season.

After the game, head coach Sean Payton drew an analogy to the city of New Orleans' recovery after Hurricane Katrina:

"This is for everybody in this city. This stadium used to have holes in it and used to be wet. It's not wet anymore. This is for the city of New Orleans."

Winning quarterback Drew Brees extended that same metaphor:

"In reality, we had to lean on each other in order to survive and in order to get where we are now. The city is on its way to recovery, and in a lot of ways has come back better than ever. We've used the strength and resiliency of our fans to go out and play every Sunday and play with the confidence that we can do it, that we can achieve everything we've set out to achieve."

Place kicker Hartley was low key despite securing the victory with his overtime field goal:

"Just helping my team get to Miami. Just doing my part."

Brett Favre didn't have much to say in defeat:

"I've felt better. It was a physical game. A lot of hits. You win that and you sure feel a lot better." Mississippi native Favre did throw his support behind the Saints:

"I would have loved to represent the NFC. But, as I told Sean throughout the year when we talked, if it's not us, I hope it's you guys."

The Vikings gave up a total of five turnovers including three fumbles. That, said running back Adrian Peterson, was the game:

"We really gave those guys the game. Too many turnovers. It's eating me up inside. - 42569

The controversy made the sneakers even more popular and they quickly became the most sought after footwear in this country and round the world.

Ravens Go Undefeated On NFL Preseason By Thumping Falcons

By Ross Everett

Even when the games don't count and the starters play little, if at all, the Baltimore Ravens hate to lose. The Ravens third string signal caller John Beck played the entire game, and the former BYU standout threw for 232 yards and a pair of touchdown passes as the Ravens easily beat the Atlanta Falcons 20-3 at the Georgia Dome. The victory gave the Ravens an undefeated NFL preseason mark at 4-0, while the Falcons finished the exhibition campaign with a 2-2 record.

Sports enthusiasts who bet on NFL preseason action were rewarded for their investment in the Ravens, as Baltimore won outright as +3 road underdogs. The 23 combined points went UNDER the posted total of 35.

Ravens QB Beck hasnt had much playing time in the NFL since his ill fated rookie year in Miami in 2007. After the game, he expressed how pleased he was to showcase his skills for the entire game:

"He (coach John Harbaugh) told me a few days ago that I would play the whole game. It was very exciting to get to play the whole game."

Beck made the most of his opportunity, finishing with 232 yards on 16 of 28 passing and a pair of touchdowns. The Ravens defensive reserves did their part by holding the Falcons to just 175 yards of total offense.

Despite the lackluster effort by his team, Falcons coach Mike Smith was nonplussed:

"You've got to understand in these games, you're going to call things defensively and offensively to put players in certain situations to evaluate them. You're not game-planning in a game like this. You're going to put players in certain situations to see how they handle certain techniques and coverages."

Falcon cornerback Chris Houston was a little more concerned after Beck abused the Atlanta defensive secondary all night:

"We've got to work on everybody getting to the ball. We've got to try to be more aggressive in our techniques. We made some plays tonight, but other than that, we still have a lot to work on as a defense."

The Ravens will get the 2009 NFL regular season underway at home against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Falcons will welcome the Miami Dolphins to the Georgia Dome to get their campaign started. - 42569

Alexis Arguello: Remembering A Champion

By Ross Everett

Alexis Arguello, one of the greatest boxers to ever compete , was found dead in his Managua, Nicaragua home in early July of an apparent suicide. He was 57 years old. Arguello was found with a gunshot wound to his chest, but his high political stature in the country meant that an investigation would be forthcoming to verify that it was indeed self inflected. Arguello was the mayor of Nicaragua's capital city at the time of his death.

Known for his class outside the ring as much for his tenacity inside the ring, hes best known to casual fight fans for his epic war in'82 with Aaron The Hawk Pryor when he moved up in weight after dominating at lighter weight classes. Ring Magazine not only named it Fight of the Year, but later would dub it Fight of the Decade. Promoter Bob Arum offered these thoughts on Pryor/Arguello:

"It was a brutal, brutal fight. That was something I will never, ever forget as long as I live. That was one of the most memorable fights I ever did."

While the first Pryor fight may have brought him the most mainstream notoriety, boxing cognoscenti are aware that Arguello is arguably the best lightweight and junior lightweight in the history of the sport. Arguello never lost a fight at-0 pounds and would end his career with an astounding 82-8 record with 65 knockouts and championships in three different weight classes. At the time, he was only the sixth man in boxing history to hold title belts at three different weights.

Ironically, Arguellos career didn't get off to a good start and he lost his debut in'68 via first round TKO. After that, he seldom lost again. He was at his best against his toughest adversaries including Ray Mancini, Bobby Chacon and Ruben Olivares. Bob Arum remembered him not only as a great fighter, but as a great man:

"Not only was he one of the greatest fighters I've ever seen, he was the most intelligent fighter. He was a ring tactician. Every move was thought out. And he was a wonderful, wonderful person."

The articulate, intelligent Arguello was frequently quoted on the fight game and how champions should conduct themselves. Here, he speaks of his attitude toward his opponents:

"Of course after the fight you want to make sure that you're okay and so is the other guy, its a brotherhood in there, so you want to make sure everyone is okay after the war is over."

Arguello didn't fight for his first title until he'd had 58 fights, and would frequently admonish boxers who didn't show the same respect for the sport or their status as champion:

"When you won that title you should know now that you are representing a whole country or nation with your actions and you are now in a glass house or under a microscope and you better be ready to make your people proud."

Most importantly, Arguello loved boxing and sought to protect it from those who would undermine its greatness:

"I respect boxing because it has given me so much and thats why I will never allow anyone to mistreat the sport of boxing if I can help it."

While the modest Arguello would never say it himself, that was for from a one sided debt and he contributed more than his fair share to the sport of boxing with his grace, intelligence, talent and toughness. - 42569

Colts Slip Past Jags In NFL Opener

By Ross Everett

The often maligned Indianapolis Colts defense matched the ferocity of their Jacksonville Jaguars counterparts play for play, and one touchdown pass from Peyton Manning proved to be enough to earn victory by a 14-12 margin in the NFL season opener for both teams. The victory was Manning's 118th in a Colts uniform, tying the legendary Johnny Unitas for the franchise lead. Unitas, of course, was the personification of the franchise during their years in Baltimore.

NFL sports betting enthusiasts who took the Jaguars as +6 road underdogs were rewarded with the pointspread cover. Indianapolis dropped to 11-16 ATS over the past three years when favored. The 26 combined points went well UNDER the posted total of 45. Despite their reputation as an offensive juggernaut, the Colts have actually trended to the UNDER over the past three seasons, with 19 UNDERs in their past 35 lined games. The Jaguars, conversely, have a slight edge to the OVER in that span with a 19-14 mark over the past three years.

After the contest, Manning displayed his characteristic humility when asked about tying the mark held by the iconic Unitas:

"I've never felt comfortable with comparisons with him. I think he's kind of in his own category. But I am proud of those wins."

Manning was more concerned about the welfare of receiver Anthony Gonzalez:

"I asked Rashean Matthis what happened and he said, 'I didn't even touch him . He has worked so hard in the offseason, I just hope it's not a season-ending injury."

Colts coach Jim Caldwell won his first game at the helm of an NFL team, and gave credit to his defense:

"Obviously, the defense played well and came up big at the end. We thought it would be a grind, and it was. I think our team certainly played tough, played hard, played with a lot of energy."

Jacksonville wasnt overly discouraged after the contest either, pleased with the intensity and their effectiveness in shutting down one of the NFLs best offenses. Maurice Jones-Drew gave props to the Indy defense after the game:

"They just did a great job in the red zone stifling our offense. My hat's off to them. But we have to learn how to finish."

Quarterback David Garrard also paid respect to the tenacity of the Indy pass rush:

"I thought, 'Here we go again, we have a great chance. You love to be in that situation. We were trying to get the ball to Maurice, but you've got to slow those pass rushers down. We did what we could do."

The Jaguars will open their 2009 NFL home slate on Sunday as they host the Arizona Cardinals. Theyll travel to Houston for a game against the Texans the following week. The Colts will head to south Florida for a game against the Miami Dolphins on Monday night. - 42569

Florida Holds Off Mississippi State To Remain Undefeated

By Ross Everett

Despite a subpar game from quarterback Tim Tebow and a determined effort from the host Mississippi State Bulldogs, the Florida Gators remained undefeated by scrapping out a 29-19 victory. Florida led by only 3 points at halftime before pulling away in the fourth quarter. The usually efficient and accurate Tebow had two touchdowns returned for interceptions and passed for only 127 yards with no touchdowns. The usually accommodating Tebow left the stadium without speaking to reporters, clearly upset with his performance. Florida improved to 7-0 while Mississippi State dropped to 3-5.

College football betting enthusiasts who took the +22' with Mississippi State as a home underdog enjoyed an easy pointspread cover. The Bulldogs improved their ATS record to 4-3 with the cover, while Florida evened their college football pointspread record to 3-3. The 48 combined points scored just managed to stay UNDER the posted total of 50. Florida has gone UNDER in five of six lined games this season while Mississippi State has gone UNDER in 4 of their seven games.

While Tebow wasn't talking, head coach Urban Meyer accepted much of the blame for his team's substandard performance:

"I did not coach well tonight. I put Tim in some tough situations. As an offense, we're not well right now. Tim's not trying to be a hero. But we might be asking him to do too much."

The Gators' are 76th in the nation in red zone efficiency, and Meyer took the blame for that fact as well:

"The problem is they've got a coach that wants to score so damn bad that he's pressing them and some of those guys aren't ready for that."

Defensive end Pernell McPhee gave Tebow fits all night and talked about his team's effort after the game:

"We knew they liked to get the ball to Tebow there. I felt like we frustrated them and made them do some new things they did not usually do tonight. They got in the I formation tonight and that is the first time I have ever seen them do that."

Florida led by only 3 points heading into the final quarter but used a Chris Raney 8 yard rush and a Dustin Doe interception return for a touchdown to open up some breathing room. Jonathan Banks cut into the lead for Mississippi State late in the game with an interception return for touchdown of his own.

The Gators face a tough challenge next weekend as they enter into their matchup against University of Georgia-what used to be known as 'The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party' until officials of both schools thought that portrayed a negative (though largely accurate) image of the colleges. They'll face Vanderbilt the next week before heading to Columbia, SC for a game against the University of South Carolina and their longtime coach Steve Spurrier. Mississippi State will play at Kentucky next weekend before a bye week. They'll return to action on November--th at home against the University of Alabama. - 42569

Ben Henderson Bests Donald Cerrone In WEC Epic

By Ross Everett

The oldest fight sport adage in the world is 'styles make fights'. For that reason, no one knew quite what to expect in Saturday's WEC Interim Lightweight Championship battle between Donald Cerrone and Ben Henderson. Henderson was known for his dominating wrestling skills, while Cerrone has a reputation as a punishing striker. Instead of being a clash of styles, however, it was an instance where the differing approaches of the two competitors complimented each other perfectly. The result was a 'fight of the year' candidate bout that Henderson won by a narrow-yet unanimous-decision.

Henderson opened the fight with a takedown, but quickly got caught in a guillotine choke attempt. He extricated himself from this predicament only to find himself in a triangle choke that appeared for a moment to be a potential fight ending submission. That would not be the case, however, and Henderson would take control in the last half of the round with his powerful takedowns and 'ground and pound' punching assault.

Rounds two and three were all Henderson, as he took Cerrone down almost at will and began to pummel him on the ground. Cerrone managed a couple of submission attempts from the bottom, and did what he could to keep Henderson off of him with upkicks but nowhere near enough to salvage either round. At times, Cerrone looked downright clueless as to what tactical approach to take.

The tide would turn again in the fourth round, as Cerrone began to time Henderson's takedown attempts. He became much more difficult to get to the ground, as well as administering punishment of his own after stuffing takedowns with punches and knee strikes. Later in the frame, Cerrone came close to ending the fight when he locked in a nasty and unorthodox choke that WEC commentator Frank Mir described as 'almost an inverted rear naked choke'. After some tense moments, Henderson was able to escape. Cerrone would also control the final round, evading Henderson's takedowns while scoring with his striking. He had another potential fight ending submission attempt in the fifth round, as he locked in an arm bar and appeared to have good leverage as he twisted Henderson's arm into a nasty angle. Nevertheless, Henderson was able to escape and finish off the fight.

The decision itself was somewhat surprising, with Henderson winning all three judges' scorecards by identical 48-47 scores. He'd clearly won rounds two and three, while Cerrone was the obvious winner of rounds four and five. This meant that all three judges had given the edge to Henderson in the first round, favoring Henderson's punching attack over Cerrone's submission attempts.

Henderson will now face WEC Lightweight Champion Jamie Varner to unify the titles. Varner entered the cage after the decision was announced to 'cut a promo' on the winner, and suggested the fight take place in December in Phoenix, Arizona though neither the date nor venue has been finalized. - 42569

Canadiens Rip Islanders For First Win In Regulation This Season

By Ross Everett

The Montreal Canadiens have gotten off to a slow start this season, and entered Thursday night's game against the New York Islanders having gone thirteen games without a win in regulation dating back to last season. Apparently, all they needed to cure their ails was a team that was struggling more than they are. The Habs jumped on them early scoring three goals in the first two periods en route to a 5-1 victory at the Bell Centre. Montreal improved to 4-5-0 with the victory while the Islanders dropped to 1-4-3.

NHL hockey betting devotees who weren't scared away by the -180 home favorite price tag on Montreal cashed their tickets with the Canadiens' big win. It was the sixth win for the Habs in their last eight meetings with the Islanders. The six goals scored just managed to go OVER the posted total of 5'.

The sputtering Montreal offense finally woke up, helped by a 43-22 shots on goal advantage. When Montreal opened a 2-0 lead in the first period it marked the first time this season that they'd led by more than a goal, a fact that surprised left winger Mike Cammalleri:

"We're making it hard on ourselves. That's something -- I didn't realize that until right now but that makes sense. Every game's been so tight, and it's important to try and win in tight games and find ways to win those games but at the same time you can't do that 82 times a year and then however many games in the playoffs, so it was important to get out to a little bit of a lead and hang on to one tonight."

Montreal goaltender Jaroslav Halek played well in relief of starter Carey Price, but lost his shutout bid when he misplayed a puck just seconds into the final period. Cammalleri described a conversation he had with Halek after the game:

"After the game I went to give him a hug and he said, 'I don't like shutouts. And I said, 'Well, you better like shutouts!' But he played great when we needed him tonight, made some solid saves, and we'll let that one go."

Islanders' coach Scott Gordon admitted that his team made it easy for the Habs' to dominate:

"We were a pretty easy team to play against. Defensively we were on our heels because of all our turnovers and it wasn't just in one area, it was coming out of our zone, it was situations where we had full control of the puck and we're not making plays. It's probably the worst that I've ever seen it tonight and it's something that we've got to get better at."

Montreal plays their next two games at home, hosting the New York Rangers on Saturday night and welcoming the Islanders back to the Bell Centre for another game next Monday night. They'll then head to Pittsburgh for a game against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Penguins on Wednesday. The Islanders have a Saturday night home game against the Washington Capitals before their return engagement with Montreal. - 42569

UFC 88 Flashback: Rashad KO's Liddell

By Ross Everett

Rashad Evans was fighting for respect. He didn't scream about demanding respect in his prefight interviews because hes smart enough to know that respect must be earned. He earned it and then some with a devastating 2nd round TKO of Chuck Liddell in the main event of UFC 88: Breakthrough.

If Evans needed any more validation of how little respect he was getting, he could have taken a look at the UFC's text message prediction poll of the main event which favored The Iceman by a whopping 81% to 19% margin. Or he could have listened to the UFC announcers, who had all but penciled Liddell in for a return to light heavyweight title contention after his inevitable victory. Still, Evans never whined about being disrespected as is commonplace among professional athletes in the stick and ball sports. He let his fists do the talking and with a perfectly placed overhand right will likely never have to worry about a lack of respect again.

From the opening horn, Evans showed no fear of Liddells once legendary power. Instead, he danced and moved (which was dumbly criticized as showboating by the UFC announce team), using his slick footwork and speed to dart in and out of range of Liddells punches.

The end was to come in the 2nd round. Liddell backed Evans up near the cage wall and went to throw an uppercut. Simultaneously, Evans responded with an overhand right that landed quicker, harder and more accurately. The perfectly placed punch knocked Liddell out cold and referee Herb Dean jumped in to cover him up and wave off the fight without taking a second look.

Rashad Evans raised his record to 17-0-1 with the TKO victory. Liddell, meanwhile, saw his record drop to 21-6"with three of those six losses coming in his last 4 fights.

Liddell's loss notwithstanding, it was a good night for UFC veterans as Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson won their fights in impressive fashion. Franklin looked particularly sharp in dismantling tough Matt Hamill, eventually prevailing by 3rd round TKO. Hamill had trouble getting inside for the takedown he needed to compete in the bout, and every time he closed the distance he was met with a barrage of Franklin punches and kicks. Franklin employed leg kicks early on, which obviously hurt Hamill's ability to shoot for takedowns and ended the bout with a perfectly placed body kick that had Hamill doubled up and tapping out even as Mario Yamasaki covered the prone fighter.

This was the UFCs first trip to Atlanta and despite a good attendance the crowd itself was somewhat disappointing. In a marked contrast to the knowledgeable and enthusiastic fans at the Target Center in Minneapolis for UFC 87"arguably the best MMA crowd ever at a US venue"the live crowd at Phillips Arena often acted as if they were at a taping of Georgia Championship Wrestling. Every foreign fighter was booed mercilessly"including South Korean Kim. Perhaps the audience didnt realize that South Korea has been a US ally since its establishment after WW II.

More problematic was the crowds utter lack of respect for the fighters postfight. Poor Dong Hyun Kim was booed during his postfight interview like he was Professor Toru Takana cutting a heel promo on Mr. Wrestling 2 after winning the Georgia Heavyweight Title by throwing salt in his opponents eyes while the referee was distracted. Not quite the respect that a 4th degree judo black belt whod just won a very tough fight deserves. Kim's treatment by the fans cant be written off as a reaction to a close split decision victory; Rashad Evans was booed after his victory over Liddell, and short of decapitating 'The Iceman' there was no way his win could have been more decisive. - 42569

Clemson Stuns Miami With Overtime Touchdown

By Ross Everett

The Clemson Tigers used a touchdown pass on their first possession of overtime to upset the Miami Hurricanes 40-37 on Saturday night to cap a back and forth game. Miami kicked a field goal on their first possession of overtime to take the lead, but Clemson responded with a seldom used play on third and 11 to get the victory as quarterback Kyle Parker completed a 27 yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Ford.

College football betting devotees who backed Clemson as +4 road underdogs eventually cashed their tickets, but they definitely earned their money in a game that saw twelve lead changes and two ties. Clemson improved to 5-2 against the spread with the cover, while Miami dropped to 4-3 against the money. The 77 combined points sailed OVER the posted total of 43. It was only Miami's second OVER of the season against four UNDER verdicts while Clemson has gone OVER in three of their seven games.

After the game, Jacoby Ford explained his logic for suggesting the surprise play in the huddle:

"We knew this game was going to come down to who made more plays. And we did."

Miami has a history of winning when their offense is clicking-this loss was only the second in 115 games when the Hurricanes score 37 or more points dating back to'85.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was just glad this one is over:

"I have a birthday next month and I think I'm going to turn 50 instead of 40. We had to put on Superman capes. We made plenty of mistakes that could have lost us the game, but they played with poise and confidence. We just kept battling."

CJ Spiller was also a big factor for the Tigers as he set a school record with 310 all purpose yards including a 90 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He also added 81 yards rushing and 104 yards receiving with a 56 yard touchdown catch.

Clemson QB Parker suggested that last week's win over Wake Forrest was a turning point for his team:

"I think last week we realized that we could be really good and this week we acted on it. I thought we really got some explosive plays and we played well."

Miami's quarterback Jason Harris sounded a markedly different tone in his postgame comments:

"This has to be my toughest loss here. We fought so hard throughout the game as a team and didn't come out with the victory. We let Clemson outwork us, we turned the ball over too much -- little things that made us get to this point."

Clemson will host FCS foe Coastal Carolina next Saturday before resuming ACC play the following week at home against Florida State. They'll travel to North Carolina State on November--. Miami plays two of their next three on the road, starting next weekend at Wake Forest. They'll face the University of Virginia at home the next week before traveling to Chapel Hill for a game against North Carolina on November--. - 42569

Chargers' Running Back Tomlinson To Miss Second Straight Game

By Ross Everett

LaDanian Tomlinson is still not fully recovered from a sprained right ankle, and as a result hell miss his second consecutive NFL regular season game this Sunday. Tomlinson was hurt in the San Diego Chargers season opening victory over the Oakland Raiders and didn't play last week. The Chargers are slated to host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon.

After playing in eight consecutive regular season games last year, the superstar running back has missed three of the Chargers last four games. Most significant was last January, when a groin injury kept LT out of the Chargers AFC playoff loss to the eventual Superbowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

When asked about his injury, Tomlinson refused comment:

"I don't have a comment about it. It is what it is."

Until his recent bouts with injury, Tomlinson had been one of the most durable running backs in the league. Prior to last season, the only start hed missed in his career was the season finale in 2004 when then-coach Marty Schottenheimer rested Tomlinson and other starters in advance of the NFL playoffs.

Chargers' coach Norv Turner spoke about Tomlinson's injury:

"It's hard because you'd like to have all your guys. It's crazy, because on Sept. 1, when people were asking me what I thought about camp, I said it was great that we were healthy and had all our guys, because that's something we haven't had in a while.

"I think we're doing the right thing with L.T. Obviously he couldn't play this week, you know, but he's getting better and hopefully he'll be able to go next week. if not, he'll be ready to go when the bye's over."

The Chargers also have a half dozen players listed as questionable due to flu like symptoms. Turner spoke about their prognosis:

"I think we're beyond the guys who had it. I obviously have a concern that they're not too drained, but I think we have a couple days to get them back. My concern is what's going to pop up tomorrow morning or Sunday morning because obviously it's going through the building."

Darren Sproles started in LTs place last week, and has performed well this season. Sproles, who also returns kickoffs and punts, had 524 all purpose yards in two games this season. Hes not as powerful a back as Tomlinson, but is a heady player who uses his speed and elusiveness to pick up yardage.

The Chargers are a -6 home favorite against the Miami Dolphins this Sunday, with the total set at 44. San Diego will travel to the Steel City of Pittsburgh next Sunday to face the Superbowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers, and then enjoy a much needed bye week. Theyll return to action on Monday, November 19th hosting the Denver Broncos. - 42569

Boise State Blitzes Bowling Green

By Ross Everett

Bowling Green played Boise State tough on their home field this weekend--at least for one quarter. Things looked good for the host Falcons at the end of the first quarter, as they'd held the #6 ranked Broncos scoreless and were right in the thick of things in a scoreless game. It was all downhill from that point for Bowling Green, as Boise State exploded for 29 unanswered second quarter points. The Broncos would eventually win 49-14, improving to 4-0 on the season.

The Broncos easily covered as -16 road favorites. The 63 combined points went OVER the posted total of 51. Boise State needed four plays or less on their first six scoring drives, and amassed a season high 529 yards of total offense. Their defense also forced the Falcons into three costly turnovers. By halftime, the game was essentially over.

Boise State coach Chris Petersen had insisted on more quick strike scoring drives. They most definitely delivered, and the coach commented to their performance after the contest:

"On offense, that's always the name of the game. It makes it a lot easier when you don't have those 15- and 17-play drives."

Broncos quarterback Kellen Moore threw 17 completions in 21 pass attempts for a total of 247 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. 195 of his total yards came during the 2nd quarter onslaught, where he completed 8 consecutive passes during one stretch. After the game, Moore indicated that his team wasnt resting on their impressive season to date performance:

"There's a lot of football to go and a lot of things to work on.

Coach Petersen concurred with his quarterbacks assessment:

"These guys are a fairly mature bunch and if not, we have a staff of mature coaches to keep them focused.

Bowling Green head coach Dave Clawson sounded somewhat in awe of the Broncos 'quick strike' offense:

"That's what they do. When they have 500 yards of offense, it will always be 10 to 12 plays where half their offense came from."

The Broncos, who are enjoying their highest regular season ranking in school history, looked sharp all around on offense despite the absence of second leading rusher DJ Harper. Harper is likely out for the year after a knee injury.

Bowling Green will take a step down in class of opposition next weekend as they host the Ohio Bobcats. Boise will return home for a game against FCS opponent UC Davis next Saturday. Theyll play on the road at Tulsa the following weekend, before enjoying a bye week. Theyll be back in action on October 25 as they make the long trip to play the University of Hawaii. - 42569

Popular in schools from coast to coast, these custom sneakers will make the boy that you experienced happy on Christmas morning.

These sneakers were named for Michael Jordan, the legendary basketball player. They were custom made for him while he was playing basketball. There are 24 versions of custom Jordan sneakers in the marketplace. These sneakers are "high-top" basketball shoes, made of light-weight materials that provide excellent support for playing basketball. When they were first released, they were innovative in that they didn't go as far up the leg as traditional high-top sneakers. When the Air Jordan 3 was released, the height of the sneaker was barely above the ankle.

The Air Jordan's became famous when Michael Jordan started wearing them on the court. They were not the traditional white high tops that basketball players traditionally wore, and National Basketball Association officials banned him from wearing them. Michael Jordan ignored the ban and was fined $5000 each time he wore them during a game. The controversy made the sneakers even more popular and they quickly became the most sought after footwear in this country and round the world.

The Air Jordan 5 version of the sneaker is actually the best selling shoe of the entire line, as many people actually buy these for their support while playing basketball, rather than just for their appearance. Boys wanting to mimic Michael Jordan's moves on the basketball court will especially appreciate these sneakers.

The sixth release of the Air Jordan sneaker was a little crazier, as the manufacturer designed them with much brighter colors than during the past. This sneaker is typically known as the "flower-power" version of Air Jordan's. For those who have a child who wants to produce a statement, fundamental essentials Air Jordan's for him.

Air Jordan 10 was released in partnership with Michael Jordan's retirement. Avid Michael Jordan fans will treasure these sneakers, as the soles have Mr. Jordan's achievements listed.

The Air Jordan Spizikes are another pair of popular custom Jordan sneakers. They are a mix of the third, fourth and sixth versions of the sneaker. They are marked with a characteristic Velcro strap that fastens across the surface of the sneaker.

Anaheim Shreds Vancouver Goaltending In Blowout Win

By Ross Everett

After losing the services of starting goalie Roberto Luongo for the indefinite future with a broken rib, the Canucks may have breathed a sigh of relief too soon after backup goalie Andrew Raycroft's performance in his first game in relief. After an excellent effort in an overtime victory over Los Angeles, Raycroft was torched for four goals in two periods before being pulled from the game. Corey Schneider, recently recalled from Manitoba of the AHL, played the third period in net giving up three more goals as Anaheim cruised to a 7-2 victory.

Anaheim has struggled to a 4-6-1 record this season, but rewarded their backers who chose to lay the -164 price as home favorites with the Ducks. The Canucks evened their record on the season at 7-7 with the loss. The 9 combined goals put on the board sailed OVER the posted total of 6. Anaheim has gone OVER in 6 of 11 while Vancouver evened their NHL totals record at 7-7.

The Ducks snapped a four game losing streak with the offensive outburst. After spotting Vancouver a 2-0 lead early in the game, Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan each tallied two goals and an assist in the lopsided victory. Mike Brown had the eventual game winning goal in the second period with his first career shorthanded marker, and even enforcer George Parros got in on the act with his first goal of the year. Jonas Hiller was sharp in goal for Anaheim, stopping 36 of 38 shots in the victory.

Vancouver's problem this season has been not getting enough shots on goal and giving up too many. In the shootout victory over Los Angeles on Thursday, they were outshot 29-12 in regulation. They'd been kept in a number of games they should have lost due to the goaltending virtuosity of Luongo, and this game didn't bode well for his absence. This was only the second time in eight games Vancouver has allowed more than two goals, a testimony to the ungodly skill of Luongo more than their defensive tenacity. They actually held a 38-34 shots on goal advantage despite the one sided tally on the big scoreboard.

Raycroft is expected to be back between the pipes for Vancouver's next game, a Sunday home date against the Colorado Avalanche. The Canucks will host the New York Rangers on Tuesday night before a road game against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday. Anaheim will play at Phoenix on Saturday night before returning to the Honda Center for the next two games. They'll host the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. - 42569

Panthers Get On Track With Win Over Bucs

By Ross Everett

Carolina Panthers' quarterback Jake Delhomme struggled on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and was fortunate that his running backs bailed him out. Delhomme threw for only 65 yards with two interceptions, but D'Angelo Williams (152 yards) and Jonathan Stewart (110 yards) kept the chains moving as the Panthers won their second straight game defeating the Bucs 28-21. Tampa Bay has now lost ten straight dating back to last season and are 0-6 for the first time since'85. Carolina improved to 2-3 with the victory.

NFL sports bettors were faced with a choice between two teams with dismal ATS records in this game, and those who had the guts to take a 1-3 team as a -3 road favorite were rewarded with the cover. It was Carolina's first NFL pointspread cover of the season and left them with a 1-4 record against the number. Tampa Bay has covered one of their six games this year.

Delhomme attempted only seven passes in the second half, but the way Williams and Stewart were running there was no reason to put the ball in the air. Williams said that even though Tampa Bay knew what was coming they couldn't stop the Panthers' running game:

"I'm sure everybody in the stadium knew what we were going to do. There were times they had nine in the box and we were still getting 7 or 8 yards."

There's been little impatience locally with Bucs' rookie head coach Raheem Morris, but his weekly habit of explaining the obvious to rationalize yet another loss is starting to wear thin:

"We got overpowered at the end, and really throughout the game."

Carolina safety Dante Wesley was ejected after clobbering Bucs' return man Clifton Smith after a fair catch call. After the game, Wesley gave this defense for his actions:

"I was just trying to make a play. You can check my record. I've never really tried to hurt anybody. I've never tried to take a cheap shot on anybody."

Wesley could face a possible fine or suspension from the NFL but, in all fairness, it did appear to be a momentary mental lapse as he was trying to make a big play and not a deliberate attempt to injure Smith.

Tampa's schedule has the look of them going from 'the frying pan into the fire' as they host the New England Patriots next Sunday-fresh off of their 57 point drubbing of Tennessee. The Bucs are +14 home underdogs to the Patriots with the total set at 45. They'll get a week off after that contest and return to action on November 8 as they host the Green Bay Packers. Carolina has an easier draw, hosting the Buffalo Bills next Sunday. The game is currently off the board pending the status of Bills' QB Trent Edwards who suffered a concussion in Sunday's win over the New York Jets. The Panthers will then play on the road the following two Sundays, traveling to Arizona and New Orleans. - 42569
